Shopping has taken on an entirely new meaning. E-Commerce has practically taken over the way we do business and threatens to shut down many small businesses. It's a real dilemma: Shopping from the comfort of my home, finding exactly what I want, verses going out and patronizing a small local business. I won't lie - it is a tough choice. In theory, many of us want to support the small, local businesses. However, in practice, we tend to use our computers.
As I contemplate this topic, I am drawn to want to know more. Specifically, what is E-Commerce and how does it differ from M-Commerce? Let's dive in a bit...
E-Commerce is pretty simple. It is the buying and selling we do online. Large online storefronts like Amazon are an example of this. As an aside, I remember when Amazon first started and many criticized them for not being a brick and mortar store. They said they would never last. Who's laughing now?
E-Commerce is generally thought of as buying using a computer. What about M-Commerce
M-Commerce is a newer term that not everyone may know. The distinction is the "M", which stands for mobile. These are transactions done on a mobile device. The proliferation of smart phones means that M-Commerce has really taken off. It is much easier to instantly buy something using your phone. And companies LOVE this! You download their app and they can send you push notifications. You can shop the moment you think of something you may want. When I think about my shopping habits, it has become increasingly M-Commerce due to the convenience.
Back to my original thoughts about shopping locally: E-Commerce and M-Commerce are here to stay. So many small businesses are jumping on the bandwagon. Small shops open up all the time. ETSY is flourishing. So, if you want to support a small business, head on down to their shop, or check to see what is available online so they can take advantage of the E/M-Commerce craze too.
